Javier Garcia-Bengochea, M.D., is a graduate of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina and Tulane Medical School in New Orleans, Louisiana where he was Alpha Omega Alpha.
He completed his general surgery and neurosurgery training at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a Clinical Fellow in neurology at The Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
He was also on the faculty of Emory University School of Medicine, in the department of neurosurgery and The Emory Spine Center.
Dr. Garcia was one of the first surgeons in the United States to perform minimally invasive spinal surgery and pioneered the first of these procedures in Florida. He has performed one of the largest series of minimally invasive spinal fusion surgeries in the Southeast U.S.
Dr. Garcia-Bengochea has designed several instruments and systems used in conventional and in particular, minimally invasive spinal surgery. He has also devised and patented methods and techniques used worldwide in minimally invasive spinal surgery.
He has lectured nationally and internationally on topics related to spinal surgery, with particular emphasis in the field of minimally invasive spine surgery.
He, was on the Advisory Board of Spinal Concepts Inc., now Zimmer Spine, and serves as a design consultant for their lumbar and cervical spine products.
Dr. Garcia-Bengochea has royalty bearing agreements with Zimmer Spine and Alphatec Spine and is a shareholder of Alphatec Spine, both publicly traded companies.

Dr Garcia-Bengochea is a diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS) and has been an examiner for the ABNS. He has served on the Governor's Council on Physical
Fitness for the State of Florida, is President of the Florida Neurosurgical Society and is a Member of the Florida Neurosurgical Society Board of Directors. Dr. Garcia-Bengochea served as a member
of the Federal Judicial Nominating Committee for the Middle District of Florida. He was on the Judicial and Ethics committees of the Florida Medical Association.
